On the afternoon of April 2nd, 2015, VEPR’s Chinese Economic Studies Program (VCES) in collaboration with the Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP) under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, organized the Launching Conference of the report “China’s Economy in the last 6 months of 2014 and prospects for 2015”
Attending the conference were experts, leading scholars and researchers in the fields of economics, politics, diplomacy from many prestigious research institutions such as the Development Strategy Institute, National Center for Socio – Economic Information and Forecast (Ministry of Planning and Investment); Institute of Chinese Studies, Vietnam Institute of Economics, Institute of World Economics and Politics, the Institute for European Studies, Institute for Southeast Asian Studies, Centre for Analysis and Forecas, etc (Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences); Central Theoretical Council; Center for Development and Integration; Institute for Foreign Policy and Strategic Studies (Ministry of Foreign Affairs); Institute of Strategy and Policy on Finance (MOIT); School of Banking and Finance (National Economic University); Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities, etc. Attending the conference were also many high level experts from the Department of Economic Affairs, Department of Northeast Asia Affairs (Ministry of Foreign Affairs); Central Institute for Economic Management (Ministry of Planning and Investment), lecturers and students of universities and institutions, media etc.
To begin the conference, Associate Prof. Chu Duc Dung – Director of the Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP) under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, gave the opening remarks, welcoming the first collaboration between the Institute of World Economics and Political and the Viet Nam Institute for Economic and Policy Research (VEPR).

Next, Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh – President of the Viet Nam Institute for Economic and Policy Research (VEPR) introduced about the conference. This conference announced the biannual research report in a series of China Periodic Macroeconomic Reports produced by VCES research team to analyze major issues of China’s economy.

After that, Dr. Pham Sy Thanh – Director of VEPR’s Chinese Economic Studies Program (VCES) presented the report “China’s economy in 2014: Go outside to support the inside”. In his presentation, Dr. Pham Sy Thanh focused on three key issues: (1) China’s economy in 2014 stands between two choices: to grow or to reform; (2) Economic diplomatic gestures of China, harnessing foreign economic to support the domestic economy; (3) Prospects for Chinese economic for 2015. In the last part of the presentation, Dr. Pham Sy Thanh shared views on strategic and economic issues of China in recent years as the idea of establishing the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the internationalization of the renminbi and China’s New Silk Road Project.

The discussion at the conference was enlivened by the comments of many experts like Dr. Luu Bich Ho, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Thai, Associate Prof. Le Cao Doan, Associate Prof. Le Van Sang, Dr. Truong Minh Huy Vu, Associate Prof. Phung Thi Hue, Dr. Tran Toan Thang, etc. The participants unanimously highly regarded the results of the report and suggested the future research directions for the subsequent reports: a combination of qualitative and quantitative research, learn more about the characteristics of Chinese new policies and strategies, especially since the eighteenth CPC National Congress and dig deeper for policy implications for Vietnam.
