In the morning of 8th December 2015, VEPR’s Chinese Economic Studies Program (VCES) collaborated with Center for International Security and Strategic Studies (CISS) of Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP) to organize the Seminar on Chinese Economic and Strategic Research No 09 titled “China – ASEAN Sub-regional Cooperation”.
Speaker of this Seminar was Mr. Nguyen Quoc Truong – Director of Department for International Studies, Development Strategy Institute, Ministry of Planning and Investment.
The seminar also attracted experts, leading scholars and researchers in the fields of economics and politics from many prestigious Institutes, lecturers and students from universities in Ha Noi.
Firstly, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Thai Quoc – Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Vietnam Economic Review and Dr. Pham Sy Thanh, Director of VEPR’s Chinese Economy Studies Program (VCES) delivered opening remarks. Seminar on Chinese Economic and Strategy Research No. 09 belongs to the series of seminars on Chinese Economic and Strategy Research which is held every two months by VCES in order to create a forum for international and national researchers presenting their research results, forming a network for academic exchanges related to Chinese political, diplomatic, security and social issues. This Seminar is the fifth cooperation between VEPR and IWEP, strengthening the relationship between two institutes.
Then, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Truong presented his research “ China – ASEAN sub-regional cooperation: several statements and forecasts” focusing on 7 main points: (1) the background of China-ASEAN cooperation; (2) main cooperation programs and initiatives; (3) the strategic objectives and major policies of China in cooperation with ASEAN; (4) China – ASEAN sub-regional cooperation and changes from China in the new context; (5) several statements and forecasts; (6) problems Vietnam have to face; (7) recommendations and solutions.
Discussion session was quite exciting thanks to feedback and suggestions from leading political experts such as Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Thai Quoc, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Sang, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Quang Tuan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Cao Doan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Duc, Dr. Pham Sy Thanh….Experts highly appreciated the policy approach of the author as well as providing economic and technical approach in analyzing China-ASEAN sub-regional cooperation in particular and Chinese investment in the world to portray the picture of China’s global strategies. Experts also discussed about the recommendations for Vietnam.
